I drove past my polling place (a suburban elementary school) on the way to the office this morning - there was a line about 30 people long stretching out the door of the classroom used for voting, so I kept going and went back at about 5:05 this evening. This time the line was about 15 people long, and it took 25 minutes to get into the classroom and registered as a voter. My county offers both electronic and paper voting - I chose paper, because I think electronic voting without a paper trail is just asking for trouble. That turned out to be a lucky decision - there were 4 or 5 electronic voting stations, and 1 paper voting station. The paper ballot station was empty the whole time I was there - I was the only paper voter that I saw. Electronic voters seemed to be waiting about 15-20 minutes after registering before they got to use the actual voting machine - I got my paper ballots and started filling them out right away. I finished voting (probably 25 candidates and issues to decide on) and my next-door neighbor, who was right behind me in line, still hadn't been called up to start (electronic) voting yet. The person who registered me (I would guess she was a college student, by her clothing/age/demeanor) didn't ask if I wanted paper or electronic voting, just circled "(E)lectronic" on her worksheet. I interrupted her and said I wanted a paper ballot and she was apologetic & cooperative. By the time I left at 5:45 or so, the line outside was back up to 30 people or so, and not moving very fast. -- Greg Broiles, JD, EA gbroiles@gmail.com (Lists only.
